The burning god rf kuang6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “It wasn’t deliberate, just literally everything I was into at the time.” “It’s a very syncretic mash of ideas-themes from 20th-century Chinese history but with a Song dynasty aesthetic and wuxia and anime sensibilities, all told through the structure of a Western epic fantasy,” says Kuang. Gods monsters and the lucky peach6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The uses of time travel are pretty standard and are well worn. ![]() And of course, the longest-running science fiction series in television history is…a show about time travel. It seems that any long-running science fiction series on television must have a time travel episode. There have been plenty of novels, stories and movies that explore the idea of time travel, to the past, to the future, to parallel timelines, to alternate worlds. Going all the way back to Mark Twain and H.G Wells, traveling outside of one’s own time frame is an idea that has been done and done innumerable times. Time Travel is one of the seminal ideas in all of science fiction. Gods, Monsters and the Lucky Peach is Kelly Robson’s successful leap from shorter fiction into novella format, combining new ideas on the uses of a time machine with a strong character-focused milieu and story. ![]()

![]() If the injustice has a part of the machine devoted exclusively to the injustice, it might need to be left alone as well, as it may be that the “remedy” may be “worse than the evil” (12). If the injustice is necessary for the “machine of government” to function, it should be left alone as it will likely sort itself out (12). Thoreau revisits the metaphor of the machine to describe times when citizens need to rebel. ![]() ![]() Laws are set up to protect the State, and the State cannot fathom that a citizen might deny its authority. The Death of Superman by Dan Jurgens6/27/2023 ![]() Nrama: What are the benefits of storytelling like that? What do you call that style? ![]() In some cases, those were individual Superman stories, but we would often have secondary characters, whose adventures might link up from month to month. Universe of Stone by Philip Ball6/27/2023 ![]() "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Beautifully illustrated and written, filled with astonishing insight, Universe of Stone embeds the magnificent cathedral in the culture of the twelfth century-its schools of philosophy and science, its trades and technologies, its politics and religious debates-enabling us to view this ancient architectural marvel with fresh eyes. ![]() In this eminently fascinating work, author Philip Ball makes sense of the visual and emotional power of Chartres and brilliantly explores how its construction-and the creation of other Gothic cathedrals-represented a profound and dramatic shift in the way medieval thinkers perceived their relationship with their world. But what did it mean to those who constructed it in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries-and why was it built at such immense height and with such glorious play of light, in the soaring manner we now call Gothic? Chartres Cathedral, south of Paris, is revered as one of the most beautiful and profound works of art in the Western canon. ![]() |
